Student and Academic Services Building

The Student and Academic Services Building is a 94,000sf multi-purpose building located on the campus of Northern Arizona University. The first floor contains offices, conferences rooms, a 152 seat auditorium and lobby and reception spaces for the Student Accounts and Admissions offices. A heat exchanger room on the first floor allows for the building to be connected to the campus chilled water and steam loops for utilization in the HVAC system. The second floor consists of several classrooms, study spaces. faculty lounge, testing computer labs and a 196 seat teaching computer lab for the mathematics department. Faculty offices and conference rooms make up the third and fourth floors. A penthouse on the roof contains the air handling units which provide heating and cooling to the floors below.


With a narrow site and a goal of LEED certification, the design for this project had to be creative to meet the energy savings goals with limited space and options for energy efficiency improvements. The main mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems are located on the first floor and in the penthouse, and are distributed throughout the building by way of a utility spline at the rear of the building. Reclaimed water was utilized in the plumbing design and a snow melt system was incorporated throughout the exterior of the building. To achieve additional energy savings, LED lighting was used exclusively in the design which resulted in an overall lighting energy consumption of 0.60W/sf. A new generator and emergency system was designed to provide backup power for the SAS building and the existing adjacent parking garage.
